Whenever there is a transition in the weather condition, our hair and scalp go through change. If we keep a close watch on this change, it is easy to fight dry hair, itchy scalp or greasy hair. While in summer and the rainy season the oil glands in your scalp overreact and hair gets greasy during the cooler months exact opposite is the issue. There is moisture loss from the hair. During this changing season your hair needs more conditioning while scalp needs stimulation to restore the natural sebum balance on the top layer.

So we got Najeeb Ur Rehman, hair expert and hair educator with brands like Schwarzkopf and Godrej Kerasmooth to give us some pointers in how to keep hair looking good in all season.

DAILY CARE

It is important to use hair oil, and oil-based products that will keep the scalp calm, and hair shiny. If you tend to bathe with hot water, it depletes the moisture and sebum from your hair and scalp making it look dull and dry. This can make hair look less shiny due to the dryness, for which you need to take extra care with conditioning and treatments. Always condition your hair after you shampoo. Use a hair masque at least once a week to restore elasticity to the strands.

When you want to replenish lost oil in your hair – which also adds to the shine – there are two types of treatments you can look at. The first is pre shampoo oil massage. Use any good vegetable oil, I recommend a blend of olive oil and almond oil, and massage your scalp thoroughly at least half an hour before you shampoo. Also apply some oil to the strands to seal the cuticles. Wrap your head in a warm towel to allow deep conditioning.

The second is post shampoo (avoid too hot water) use an oil based finishing product like the one based on Argan Oil. It is light and evaporates after application leaving hair looking soft and shiny without being greasy. To get soft, shiny hair wash and towel dry your hair then take a few drops of and apply on your hair. You can style and set as usual. The best bit about argan oil is that you can use styling products for blow drying or curling, after applying this to your strands.

NOURISH YOUR HAIR FROM INSIDE

When it comes to keeping your hair really shiny and healthy from inside stock up on proteins since hair is made up of proteins. Take a healthy portion of protein based foods to strengthen your strands from the inside. To avoid flaky scalp and dryness in your hair try to eat yeast-based foods like idlis, roti or kulcha to which yeast powder has been added. For mature women it is also important to take a daily supplement of iron, and vitamin B12 to keep the scalp healthy.

CARE FOR COLOURED AND TREATED HAIR

Since coloured or treated hair is already dry, so you have to be extra careful with your care regime for such hair types. Again I stress on the issue of deep conditioning your strands every time your shampoo. Massage your hair and scalp with oil before washing to ensure that the circulation in your scalp is good. Also instead of a conditioner use a hair masque after every wash. It will add shine and seal the cuticles. For over stressed hair masque is important because it works both on the inner layers if your strands and on the outer layers to make the strands stronger. Also ensure that you go for a spa treatment at least once a month. If your hair is too dull and damaged then I recommend twice a month spa treatments.

PARTY HAIR PAMPERING

If you are a party animal, your hair will go through some major styling rigour. Always look at enhancing the shine of your hair. Avoid over blow drying, as that can dull the hair. Use a style control product that holds the style without making the hair look sticky. Look for lightweight styling mousse or gels that retain hair’s natural movement. After styling always use a shine spray as the finishing product. It gives a very healthy shone to the hair and keeps the hair looking good till your next wash.
